‘Moving Machines’ is a an augmented-naturalistic soundscape work that examines the energy and movement of various modern-day modes of transport in their typical contexts - the chaos of cars on the road, the bullet-like directionality of trains, and the colossal landing and lift-off of airplanes.

The piece’s organic form consolidates these varied materials into an immersive and almost hyperreal sonic journey, flowing from one transport space to another seamlessly. Many spatial transformations were used to emphasise this immersive flow and to exaggerate the movements of each vehicle - pushing and pulling the listener through each passage.
The piece also features various spectrally processed materials (including several drone-like motifs built from the transportation recordings) that provide more abstracted atmospheres. These provide a tranquil backdrop to the otherwise intense vehicular movements, suggesting a certain beauty or sublimity of the intense spatial energy that these machines embody. This ‘sublimity’ lies at the heart of the work’s intent; ‘Moving Machines’ is an attempt to express the awe of pure spatial energy carried by the seemingly mundane, familiar vehicles we associate with in our daily lives.
